WHERE FIT GETS DONE

From one gym in Rosny

Every gym chain starts with one location. Ours was in Rosny, on Hobart’s Eastern Shore, in March 2009.

The idea behind it wasn’t complicated. Training shouldn’t cost a fortune. It shouldn’t fit around opening hours. And it shouldn’t come with a list of extras you’ll never use. Good equipment, a fair price and doors that are open whenever you are. A gym that gets out of the way and lets you train.

Tasmanians kept showing up

It turned out plenty of people wanted exactly that. Before the year was out, Zap had opened in Moonah and Devonport. Within a few years there was a Zap in Kingston and Claremont, in Launceston and Burnie, at Salamanca and in the heart of the Hobart CBD.

None of it came from a grand expansion plan. People kept turning up, so we kept building, one suburb at a time, wherever there was demand for a gym close to home. By the mid-2010s Tasmanians could train at a Zap from the Eastern Shore to the North West Coast.

The idea travelled

What worked in Tasmania worked elsewhere too. The same idea of quality kit, low price and 24/7 access went to the mainland. Today there are Zap gyms in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane, and a Passport membership gets you into every one of them.

The map got wider. The idea stayed exactly the same.

Still where it started

Rosny is still open. Still training members. And today, around 1 in 15 Tasmanian adults is a Zap member.*
